The Bate Bay Body Basher Barbarians are Back!
If first in are best dressed, then consider the Bate Bay Body Basher Barbarians the most stylish guys in the business. As first registered for Beach Water Polo Fours Wollongong, the boys from The Shire are ready to head down the M1 for the Open Men’s Competition in December.
While the Bate Bay Body Bashers are usually spotted with their handplanes and fins at Wanda’s Gate 8, this team have a range of sporting backgrounds, including water polo, soccer and surf club. Team captain and first to register, Mathew Schweighoffer, commented on the advantage that the multiple sporting backgrounds brings the team, “we have a great combination of people who play water polo and people who are purely body surfing based, which is perfect for Beach Water Polo Fours. It brings a few different perspectives to the team and changes the way we play.”
The BBBB Barbarians were finalists in our inaugural Beach Water Polo Fours event in 2017, however were unfortunately defeated in penalty shootout to the Mooses. “We weren’t expecting to go as far as we did in last year’s tournament, but we went out there and gave it a red hot crack. Making the final alone was much better than what we expected, and to take the Mooses to penalties in the final game added a bit of excitement and suspense. We are secretly hoping to do one better this year!” Mathew commented.
With Wollongong Harbour hosting the first event of the season, Mathew noted that the team is excited to play in the new location. “We had so much fun last year which is obviously why we came back, but I’ve never swum in Wollongong Harbour before so it’s going to be awesome! There will be less swell than Bundeena which alone makes it different, but it’s a popular spot as well so it will be great to draw more of a crowd!”
